TAS and Bus Service Reliability

Bus Operating Analysis

Recent developments to our QDATA software have extended its capability to measure of bus service performance and identify areas of the network where problems arise. These results are key inputs to inform Punctuality Improvement Partnerships.

QData can now assess by hour of day and for points along a route:

We have produced two methodology statements that detail our approach to Bus Service Punctuality and Bus Operating Analysis using ETM data.

Delay Analysis

In addition to being able to identify the delay points on bus networks electronically, we can undertake detailed on-bus delay surveys to determine the location, cause and severity of delays on specific bus corridors. Each time the bus speed falls below walking speed, surveyors record the type, duration and location of the delay, such as:

  • Passengers boarding and alighting
  • Awaiting traffic signals
  • Stuck in traffic
  • Awaiting opportunity to move (pulling out of traffic, roundabout approach etc.)
  • Bus operational problems

The delay survey allows us to build up a profile of bus delays by cause and location and relate this analysis to the reliability and operating assessment. We can then produce recommendations to address the problems.
QData processing outputs and delay analysis results provide strong evidence to support the business case for funding of infrastructure improvements where unreliability problems occur.
