Fares and Ticketing
TAS has led the field in the monitoring and development of fares and ticketing strategies since 1989.
Our work has included:
-
assisting operators with fares and ticketing initiatives
-
the introduction of new Multi-Operator ticketing schemes
-
complex analysis of fares elasticity
-
modelling
Multi-Operator Ticketing schemes
TAS has worked in partnership with local authorities and bus operators on the development of a number of multi-operator ticketing schemes. With a thorough understanding of the Competition Act 1998, which governs ticketing schemes and the guidance from the Office of Fair Trading (OFT) and Confederation of Passenger Transport (CPT). We have successfully completed projects for:
-
Cambridgeshire County Council
-
Oxfordshire County Council, and
-
Surrey County Council
Fares Elasticity and Modelling
The intricacies of fares elasticity and modelling of price effects have been studied by TAS as part of commissions for the Department for Transport. Passenger responses to fare changes have been monitored and evaluated in conjunction with a range of transport operators and a model of projected fare elasticities developed in conjunction with academic partners at the University of London.
We have undertaken a major comparative survey of fare levels and trends in UK bus operations and have advised bus operators on future fares policy. This has included detailed modelling of the impact of radical fares restructuring, including zonal and flat fares.
Boarding Times
Our recent research has shown that buses spend around 11% of their journey time boarding and alighting passengers. Outputs from QDATA Analysis software have demonstrated the variations in boarding times for passengers with different ticket types and fare values. This analysis can be built into operators' fares and ticketing strategies to avoid unintended impacts on boarding times and hence reliability.
